U.S. Health Care through the lens of Covid-19

By Christine Stankiewicz

Our world was greatly impacted in the early months of 2020. Our daily language started to include phrases like quarantine, social distancing, and flatten the curve. News coverage became focused on one thing – Covid-19. There was an emphasis on the number of confirmed cases and death, treatment testing, and unemployment rates. But the story I thought was missing was the price we might pay. Not the toll on the economy but the medical bills.

The entire world is in the fight against Covid-19, but what makes the United States stand out is our health care coverage. Unemployment rates are skyrocketing, leaving many Americans without health insurance that was tied to their employment. Potential treatment costs are ranging from $20,000 to over $70,000 on average per person. What is going to happen when the medical bills arrive?
